Zero-based budgeting in 30 minutes

Give every dollar a job without spreadsheets. A practical first pass you can finish before your coffee gets cold.

Zero-based budgeting is simple to describe and hard to start: every dollar that lands in your account gets assigned to a category until nothing is left unassigned. The difficulty is never the math — it is the first setup.

Start from last month, not from zero

Import or add a single month of transactions and let the categories fall out of your real spending. Most households discover they only use twelve to fifteen categories, not the forty a template suggests.

Fund the boring things first

Rent, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments. These are the amounts that decide whether the rest of the plan survives contact with reality. Once they are funded, whatever is left is genuinely discretionary.

Leave a buffer category

A small unassigned buffer prevents the most common failure mode: one surprise expense forcing you to re-plan the entire month. When the buffer covers it, the plan holds.

Review weekly, not daily

A ten-minute weekly review beats daily checking. You catch drift early, but you are not making decisions on noise.
